Christopher’s Debut with the Philharmonic Orchestra

Tavernier 2

It was a glorious success!   October 24th, Freeburg Piano Perzina Artist, Christopher Tavernier gave his first performance with a professional symphony orchestra.  He performed with amazing ease and finesse, as if he had been doing it for his entire life – all 13 years o

f it.  The opportunity was his because he won the Tar River Philharmonic Orchestra’s 2013 Young Artist Competition.

The Dunn Center for the Performing Arts at North Carolina Weslyan College in Rocky Mount, NC was a beautiful location for his debut.  The 9 foot Steinway was center stage.  Of course, I must let you know that the piano was tuned and prepped for the concert by our very own master technician.   By the way, I’m looking forward to Christopher’s future concerts around the country and world.  Surely, Keith and I will be part of the traveling concert team.  Oh, what a joy that will be!

Christopher played Tchaikovsky’s Op. 23 – Piano Concerto No. 2 in Bb minor, Movement 1 as the final piece before the intermission.  Previous to the big night, he had only played the piece as a two-piano performance with his teacher, Dr. John Cobb (our Freeburg Pianos Faculty Artist).  As wonderful as that has always been, hearing Christopher play with the symphony surpassed it.

I sat between Keith and Dr. Cobb, two men I greatly respect.  Dr. Cobb prepared the pianist and Keith prepared the piano.  What a great team.  I think about Dr. Cobb a lot and how he is pouring his life into young Christopher.  The teacher/mentor in me really understand what that means.

Life is Grand
